Inside Interior Designer Florence Lim's Singapore Home

I love being surrounded by aesthetically beautiful things.

The first thing you notice when entering Lim's house is how the light strikes and how the outdoors have been integrated into the overall concept. Florence explains how she used the same tiles for both the exterior and interior to create unity within the space: "It was the lush green landscape here that drew me to this house."

Horses, pumpkins, flowers - the sense of nature in the apartment is enchanting. A standout piece in the apartment is the mirror, created by artist Barnaby Barford, framed in tiny porcelain flowers. Back in 2015, Barford was responsible for executing The Tower of Babel which was on display at the V&A's Medieval & Renaissance Galleries, and was commissioned by Louis Vuitton. Florence has been collecting the artist's work since the beginning of his career.

In the all-white dining room, a work by Yayoi Kusama is a well-placed pop of colour. At Singapore's major trade fairs, Florence Lim is always looking for objects that blend seamlessly with her interior decoration. She says, "Someone once pointed out to me that I seem to collect mostly the work of female artists."

A contemporary thread runs through the house, including works by Tracey Emin and Anish Kapoor. On the silver Kapoor piece that sits in the space just outside of the dining room, Florence explains "when I look at it, I still love it. That is the best lesson when it comes to collecting art".

Florence describes her method of buying and collecting as "neither deliberate nor academic, but entirely random".

If you're unsure on how to furnish your home, Florence has a good tip: "Your favourite artist is a good place to start. After that, look at auctions and find stay away from the high street.”

Florence described the inspiration for her home as follows: "My style is very contemporary, not minimal but not stuffy. At the end of the day it is still a family home and the family aspect orientates the living, dining area and entertaining spaces. The library has a sense of family, it is a comfortable room."

Florence explained how many pieces from her London home were brought to Singapore. "The beauty of buying good furniture is, that, no matter where you go, you can adapt it."
