Brunk Auctions’ next Asian Art Auction takes place August 18, 2022 and will include a diverse group of objects primarily from four major United States collections. Objects from the Collection of Charles M. Blackmon includes fine jades and over 50 snuff bottles collected during the early to mid 20th century. Born in South Carolina in the early 1900s, Mr. Blackmon traveled extensively and donated to various Southern institutions during his lifetime. His diverse collection now comes to market, featuring white jade, celadon jade, snuff bottles, as well as Chinese and Indian bronze buddha and deities.
Also featured in the sale will be objects from a Cambridge, Massachusetts Harvard professor, an old North Carolina collection, and early Chinese ceramics from the estate of Peter Tillou of Litchfield, Connecticut. Mr. Tillou had amassed a collection of over 80 Neolithic polychrome pots, vessels and figures, some of which will be offered in this sale. The remainder will be offered in our Peter Tillou Single Owner sale on September 29-30, 2022, along with a large collection of Han dynasty and Warring States bronzes.
Chinese porcelain and pottery is represented across several dynasties and styles, including blue and white, famille rose, famille verte, and monochromatic glazes.
Highlights include a rare Chinese Wucai bowl with silver mounts, with Oriental Society Exhibit labels from the 1950s and provenance dating back generations; a Chinese yellow ground and famille verte bowl; a pair of Chinese green celadon slip decorated vases; a finely enameled anhua Chinese famille rose porcelain vase with a Qianlong reign mark and a Chinese Wanshou Wujian porcelain jardiniere.
A wide array of other Asian decorative arts will also be available. Of note is a Chinese cinnabar lacquer covered censer with jade finial. Chinese textiles include a large group of framed embroidered Qing dynasty rank badges, kesi silk and needlework panels, and robes.
Bronzes from China, Tibet, and Southeast Asia are available, including a large Chinese bronze ritual vessel and cover; a Tibetan bronze gilt figure of Vajrapani; and various other bronzes depicting various buddhas, bodhisattvas, and deities. Korean ceramics and scrolls also feature in the sale.
Japanese decorative art and works on paper are represented as well, from ceramics to scrolls and woodblock prints. Of note is a Kofun period Japanese Haniwa figure with stand. Japanese woodblock print highlights include works by contemporary artists Hiroshi Yoshida and Kawase Hasui, while scrolls feature works by Tomioka Tessai.
