Fr. 263. 1886 $5 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45. Here is a lightly circulated example of the Rosecrans - Huston signature combination with the large red spiked treasury seal. Here a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant may be seen just right of center which was engraved by Lorenzo Hatch. A large "V" die counter seen at upper right along with "5" seen at lower left lend an ornate feel that's arguably excessive even by the standards of the period which is further brought to form by the lack of extensive circulation typically seen among surviving examples of this short-lived series imprint. To that end, the back design which appeals to coin-focused collectors for obvious reasons offers a row of five contemporary Morgan-type silver dollars with the center coin showing the obverse of a coin dated "1886" while every coin appears with an almost prooflike radiance that effortlessly underscores the popularity of this design especially in better grades. PMG comments "Stain Lightened." Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
