A Psychedelic Gem Ripe with Bold Embossing Fr. 243. 1886 $2 Silver Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. Issued at a time when intricate and complex designs were the norm. The $2 Silver Certificates issued under the Series of 1886 went beyond that norm with a design that borders on the psychedelic even among the distinct entries included with that series imprint. Even though much can be said with regards to the selection of Winfield Scott Hancock whose portrait may be observed at right, the back design is something outside of the ordinary emphasizing a veritable interlocking mass of floral and geometric embellishments overlaid atop a bed of scrollwork seen with the wording and clauses typical of the period. At left and right, two large vaguely rounded denomination counters may be observed emblazoned "2" while flanked by attractive scrollwork that effectively frames the overall composition. Between the counters a group of geometric embellishments may be observed in an almost oppositional pattern essentially constricting the redeemability clause into an almost snake-like pattern that underscores the use of the word "psychedelic" with regards to these notes that would soon be replaced with a new design when the Series of 1891 was introduced. Yet these elements are typically seen in the company of prolonged circulation, but it takes little to reason that this piece is not your typical example of this design even among others at this lofty grade level. This example has been noted for "Great Embossing" by PMG which cuts a distinct raised contrast against the back design while the engraved cuts seen along the margins are embossed to such a point that one can read text like "SILVER CERTIFICATE" that's endemic to face design just below Hancock's portrait when viewing the back making this a truly exceptional survivor that has rightly earned its proverbial laurels. Noted by PMG for "Exceptional Paper Quality, Great Embossing." PMG Pop 3/2 Finer. Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
