February 22, 2021 will remain a historic date in the world of auctions and whiskey: the total final price for the Whisky Auctioneer’s ‘Perfect Collection’ reached a staggering figure of $9.1 million, making the collection of 3,900 bottles the most valuable private collection ever sold in a single whiskey auction.
The auction saw 1,557 bidders from 54 countries participate. The most expensive bottle in the collection, the Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare 60 Year Old, sold for a hammer price of £1 million ($1.4 million), the first time a single bottle of whiskey has reached such a figure.
The first part of the auction, in February 2020, had seen the sale of the Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami 60 Year Old for the already considerable sum of £825,000 ($1.1 million).
These results are yet another example of how online auctions are increasingly shaking the traditional secondary market, attracting the attention of high-value investors and collectors around the world.
