RM Sotheby’s will present a single, historically significant Formula 1 car in its upcoming Sealed – Senna’s Lotus 98T auction, running from March 4–11, 2026. The sale is dedicated to the 1986 Lotus 98T, chassis 98T-3, driven exclusively by Ayrton Senna during the opening half of the 1986 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. Offered with an estimate of $9,500,000–$12,000,000 USD, the car represents a defining example of the sport’s turbocharged era and a pivotal chapter in the career of the future three-time World Champion.

Earmarked for Senna’s second season with Lotus, chassis 98T-3 contested the first eight races of the 1986 championship, delivering two victories, five pole positions, and three additional podium finishes. The car debuted at the Brazilian Grand Prix with a second-place finish before securing victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez and later winning again in Detroit.
Designed by Gérard Ducarouge, the Lotus 98T emerged during one of Formula 1’s most extreme technical periods, when regulations placed virtually no limits on engine output. Its carbon-fibre and aluminium composite chassis was paired with a Renault-built 1.5-litre turbocharged V-6 producing approximately 900 brake-horsepower in race trim. In qualifying configuration, with increased boost and specialised components, output exceeded 1,000 brake-horsepower — figures that place the model among the most powerful Grand Prix cars ever constructed.

The car is one of only four chassis built for the 1986 season and marks the final Formula 1 model to wear Lotus’s iconic black and gold John Player Special livery. Its documented competition record, distinctive appearance, and association with Senna have secured its status as one of the most recognisable machines of the era.
Chassis 98T-3 was acquired directly from Lotus in 1988 and has since remained within a small number of prominent private collections, maintaining an unbroken chain of ownership. It later underwent restoration by Paul Lanzante Ltd and is presented in exceptional condition following a decade of careful custodianship by its current owner. The car is described as fully prepared for operational use, subject to event requirements.

Senna’s tenure with Lotus marked a decisive phase in his development as a driver. Having joined the team in 1985, he quickly established himself through exceptional qualifying pace and race performances, with the 98T providing a highly competitive platform during his 1986 championship campaign. As the most successful chassis from his two-year period with the team, 98T-3 remains closely associated with his emergence as one of Formula 1’s defining talents.
RM Sotheby’s Sealed – Senna’s Lotus 98T auction will take place from March 4–11, 2026. Prospective bidders must register in advance.
