In November 2019, the world was rocked by a break-in into Dresden's Green Vault, in which historical jewelry worth an estimated $1 billion was stolen. The treasures included three sets of diamonds and other precious jewels, the majority of which date to between 1782 and 1789 and were acquired by Augustus the Strong and Augustus III.

The police identified their main suspects as a group of five young men belonging to the “Remmo” clan, a Kurdish family of Lebanese origin well known to the authorities for aggravated thefts and organized crimes.

The first three suspects were arrested in November 2020 during a large-scale operation in Berlin-Neukölln. A fourth arrest took place in December during another raid in the Berlin district.

The fifth suspect, the twin brother of the 22-year-old arrested in December, was sought with an international arrest warrant. He was then recently arrested in Berlin on May 17.

All five are charged with serious gang theft and arson in connection with the Dresden jewelry theft. None of the five has so far commented on the allegations.
