Model Boats

Throughout history, children's toys have imitated trends in day-to-day life; therefore, it is unsurprising that model boats can be found dating back to antiquity. Toy boats have evolved drastically from the early versions crafted from rudimentary materials like clay and bronze, with modern model boats including electric motors, engines and remote or radio control functions. Model boats have not only been used as children's playthings, but also as display items and burial or votive offerings. Until the 1700s, models played a crucial part in the process of vessel manufacturing, depicting the plan of a boat or ship to potential buyers. Since the early 20th century, kits have been available which enable boat enthusiasts to build their own models. These can be fitted with motors or engines if intended for racing purposes. Antique and vintage model boats are also popular amongst enthusiasts and collectors.
