Marina Abramović (1946 -) Serbia

Yugoslavian born Marina Abramović is a performance art pioneer using the human body as a primary medium to experiment with its mental and physical limits. Between 1976 and 1988 Abramović collaborated with German artist Ulay to explore the duality of female and male relations. As Abramović went solo she has continued to work independently, establishing herself as one of the most discussed artists of our time. Abramović’s retrospective at the MoMA, “The Artist Is Present”, engages the viewer in her art by letting them sit at a table across from the artist, in a silent encounter.
