Bauhaus was a school för crafts, architecture and design in Germany between 1919-1933. The school is seen as a predecessor to functionalism and has had a big impact on modern art and architecture. Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius and had some of the most well known artists and architects as teachers. Amongst them was Gunta Stölzl, Herbert Bayer, Josef Albers, Marcel Breuer, Oskar Schlemmer, Lyonel Feininger, Johannes Itten, László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee and Vasilij Kandinskij. Bauhaus foundation stod upon the idea to connect art, architecture design and sculpture in a way to bridge the gap between higher culture and the lower end of craft. The Bauhaus school has had a big impact on modern graphic design and typography.
Changing the way people perceived architecture and design was one of Mies van der Rohe’s biggest goals. He succeeded by going against all the norms of traditional design.
