Giant, Kikito is a famous artwork from 2017 by the French street artist JR at the border between the United States and Mexico. About the ArtworkThe location: The piece stands in the Mexican city Tecate, right at the border with the US.The image: It shows a gigantic photo of a toddler named Kikito. With the dynamically staged documentary Women Are Heroes, the Paris-born photographer JR pays homage to oppressed women. JR gives women from Brazil, India, Kenya and Cambodia a face. Literally and figuratively. The idea: JR wanted to continue a theme about immigration that he had previously started at Ellis Island.The people: He and his team selected 15 people who had moved to New York City in the preceding year.The message: The project highlighted how recent immigrants often live and work invisibly in the city.The installation at Flatiron PlazaThe artwork: JR pasted a huge black-and-white image of nearly 46 meters onto the ground of Flatiron Plaza in Manhattan.The subject: This gigantic portrait showed Elmar Aliyev, a 20-year-old immigrant and waiter from Azerbaijan.The interaction: Pedestrians walked all day directly over the oversized poster without noticing it, symbolizing how society often overlooks immigrants.
