VOGHERA, Giovanni Illustratione dell'Arco della Pace in Milano. [Dedicato a Sua Eccellenza il Sig. Conte Francesco di Hartig, Governatore della Lombardia. Milano, Architetto Ingegnere Voghera, 1838. Large oblong folio. Imperial green morocco of the period, wide gilt garland framed by a gilt fillet and a gilt roulette of the same geometrical motif with double gilt lozenges underlined by cold roulettes and a gilt roulette all framed by a gilt fillet, large gilt arms of Ferdinand I in the center, gilt lace on the back covers. Fully engraved title, (1) p. of dedication, 4 pp. of text and 28 lithographed plates in black. First edition of this album, in fine Italian morocco with the coat of arms of Ferdinand I, Emperor of Austria, King of Lombardy-Venetia. Lombardy-Venetia. Ferdinand I (1793-1875) was crowned Emperor of Austria in the year of the Arco della Pace's inauguration and publication, 1838. This great neo-classical arch, originally made of wood, was built by Italian architect Luigi Cagnola to honor Eugène de Beauharnais in 1807: Napoleon had just invested him Prince of Venice, declaring him his adopted son and heir presumptive to the Italian crown, just as his first child with Augusta-Amélie of Bavaria was born. Bavaria. Unfinished at the fall of the Empire, construction resumed under Francis I of Austria, who dedicated the arch to the Peace of the Great European Powers in 1815. The work was completed in 1838, by architects Francesco Londonio and Francesco Peverelli in 1833. Very fine views, including a chiaroscuro perspective, cross-sections and bas-reliefs, architectural and sculptural details... Slight rubbing to spine and corners, top headband damaged, folding mark to boards, very slight foxing, one hinge split over 1 cm but a good copy.
