JÉRÔME DAVID (FRANCE CIRCA 1600-1662) AFTER GUIDI RENI (ITALY 1575-1642). "Virgin and Child". Engraving, circa 1635-1640. Signed in the plate. I. 21.9 x 17.6 cm, 23.5 x 19.1 cm. Born in France, David worked during the 1620s and 1630s in Italy, and was certainly in Bologna from 1630 to 1634, returning to Paris by 1640. He made numerous portrait engravings after designs by Claude Vignon, as well as Italian masters such as Giorgione, Guercino, Reni, and others. PROVENANCE The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c).
