A nude in a hammock signed 'E Gonzales' l.r., pencil, with a further pencil study of a standing nude verso, 9.5 x 14.5cm Provenance: Sotheby's, New Bond Street, 'Impressionist and Modern Art', 23 October 1996, lot 17. A gifted painter and draughtswoman, Eva Gonzalès was among the most accomplished women artists of her generation. Trained by Charles Chaplin and later the only formal pupil of Édouard Manet, she moved within the circles of the early Impressionists while preserving a quietly distinctive voice of her own. Her work often explored the private and reflective spaces of women's lives, portraying her subjects with dignity, intimacy and emotional warmth. In this delicate study, Gonzalès renders a reclining nude with exceptional softness and restraint. The form seems to breathe beneath the light touch of her pencil, its contours suggested rather than defined. The mood is one not of display but of quiet repose - a moment observed with sympathy and understanding. Drawings such as this reveal Gonzalès' ability to transform an academic exercise into something deeply personal, where tenderness becomes a form of truth.
