Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865-1926) Germany

Wilhelm Kuhnert was a German painter and illustrator. Kuhnert is considered to be one of Germany’s leading animal painters and is best known for his animal motifs, especially the lion, which was his favorite subject. Kuhnert studied in Berlin and then spent much of his time on long trips to Egypt, East Africa and India, where he observed the wild animals in their natural environment. Many of Kuhnert’s sketches were drawn in the field and served as reference material for a large number of oil paintings and illustrations for zoological books.
