Per Kirkeby (1938-) Denmark

Per Kirkeby was born in 1938 in Denmark. He is a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and author. As a young man, Kirkeby studied to become a geologist. Traces of his studies are evident in his paintings, which are often on masonite. He is considered a pop artist and often works with materials such as bronze, stone and oil. Kirkeby and Björn Nörgaard have done happenings and films together. His international breakthrough came in the 1980s. Since then, he has exhibited at numerous museums worldwide and has created several public works, including on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm and on the square in Höganäs. Kirkeby was one of the artists at Den Eksperimenterende Kunstskole (The Experimental Art School), which Poul Gernes founded in 1961.
