Nick Brandt studied film and painting at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London. He moved to the US in 1992 and began working as a music video director. He began to approach photography more seriously in 1995 while in Tanzania to direct the video for “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson. Brandt was moved by the wildlife of the Savanna, and he decided to change careers and become a photographer. In 2000, he embarked on a project to capture the beauty of East Africa before it disappeared on account of human activity. Brandt prefers not to use a zoom lens, citing his belief that the personality of an animal can only be captured on film by taking the image up close. Brandt has had numerous solo shows at a variety of galleries worldwide, including the Shapiro Gallery in Sydney, Bernheimer Fine Art Photography in Munich, and the June Bateman Gallery in New York.
