Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) Mexico

Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1907. Kahlo started painting 1925 after a bus crash that left her confined to bed for a long time. She mainly painted self portraits that reflected various events in her life, and is celebrated by feminists for painting an uncompromising image of the female form and experience. She was also a devoted communist and married the Mexican painter and communist Diego Rivera in 1929. Their many times quite stormy relationship turned out to be the inspiration for many of her portraits.
