Emile Gallé was a successful French glass designer, and is considered to be a pioneer in glass art with his technical innovations in glass production. Gallé’s glass art strongly influenced other artists in the Art Nouveau movement. Gallé is famous for his decorative vases and lamps. Early in his career, he worked mainly with translucent glass, with light, tinted colors, which later transcended to more solid and stronger colors. Gallé’s glass art is often described as "poetry in glass", for he provided each vessel with a poetic message. He drew inspiration from nature and depicted with etched and cut decors scenes of landscapes, flowers, butterflies or birds among foliage, and was also strongly influenced by Japanese design.
