Charles Hinman was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1932. Hinman is known for his three dimensional canvas paintings. Together with Robert Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, Jack Youngerman and Agnes Martin Hinman was a part of a counter movement to New York’s Upper East Side artists and the american abstract expressionists. Hinman experimented with the physical form of paintings and with his shaped canvas he moved away from the traditional rectangular form of paintings. The contours became part of the subject itself as he created a new type of hybrids between paintings and sculptures.
Hinman attended Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (Everson Museum of Art), Syracuse University and Arts Student League.
