Sculptor and artist Barbro Bäckström studied at University College of Arts, Crafts & Design in Stockholm from 1960 to 1964. She held her first solo exhibition at the student gallery Atheneum in Lund in 1965. Bäckström is best known for her reliefs and sculptures in iron mesh from which she shapes the naked human body from a minimalist perspective. The mesh Bäckström uses hangs freely in the space through which it creates depth, shadows and life. In the 1980s Bäckström began to experiment with abstract forms made of solid material such as iron and bronze.
