Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter. At 20, he studied art at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and in that period, he painted landscapes in accordance with the rules of Impressionism. Mondrian’s painting style later evolved from figurative to completely abstract geometrical patterns, a style usually called Neo-plasticism. He painted rectangular fields with only the primary colors, blue, red, and yellow, to symbolize the urban rhythm of New York. Many consider Mondrian the founder of abstract art, and he was also an important contributor to the artist’s group De Stijl. Mondrian was highly productive, and today his work can be seen at the world’s major museums.
