Zeldzame 17e-eeuwse Neurenbergse tinnen reliëfschotel...

Rare 17th-century Nürnberg tin relief charger ("Noah Plate" / Edelzinn Teller) – dated 1619 Paulus (Baulus) Öham d. Ä. & Dynastie Spatz (Hintze II, no. 193) – Sister piece from the Frits Philips Collection (Dubbe cat. no. 110) – Origin: JF Monasso Collection Exceptionally fine and ultra-thin cast tin decorative dish (Edelzinn Teller / Schaugeschirr), richly decorated in high relief with scenes from the Book of Genesis. This type of ornamented plate in the 17th century was not intended for daily use at table, but served as a precious showpiece on the sideboard or in the cabinet of art, as a replacement for wrought precious metal. Forensic attribution & comparison with the Frits Philips Collection This plate from the JF Monasso Collection is the exact sister piece of the famous example from the Frits Philips Collection (described and pictured by B. Dubbe, Choice from the tin collection of Frits Philips, 1983, cat.no. 110, Ø 17.5 cm). Where Dubbe, at the time, ascribed the piece under Hintze II, no. 258 to Hans Spatz II, microscopic inspection of the forge mark between God and Eve proves that this is the die state Hintze Band II (Nürnberger Zinn), p. 67, no. 193, from the original Nuremberg die maker Paulus (Baulus) Öham the Elder (master 1604–1634). As Erwin Hintze documents under no. 193, this particular 17.5 cm model in the right half of the Nuremberg coat of arms shows the letter B (Baulus) above the letter Ö (Öham) modified into a half circle. This distinguishes this early specimen immediately from later 19th-century castings (Hintze no. 194), which due to casting shrinkage measure 17.2 cm and bear a blank fantasy mark without letters. Compared with the Frits Philips collection piece (which shows a later stamped mark in the smooth mirror keel and a later soldered eyelet on the edge), this JF Monasso collection piece remains in a completely pristine, unaltered state without later additions. Genealogical timeline of the Nuremberg mould (1619 – 1752) Using Erwin Hintze (Band II, Nürnberger Zinn), the life of this famous iron matrix (the original mould is conserved in the Museum of Applied Arts Leipzig, inv. no. 09.93) can be reconstructed generation by generation: 1619 – 1634 | Paulus (Baulus) Öham d. Ä. (Hintze no. 191 & 193): Original die maker in Nuremberg (master in 1604, Burgess 1626–1630, died of the plague in September 1634). He cut his master mark (B Ö next to the Nuremberg eagle) between God and Eve in the form. During the die work, the lower letter Ö took the form of a half circle (Hintze no. 193, Dm. 17.5 cm). 1630 – 1670 | Hans Spatz II (Hintze no. 258a): Took over the mould after Öham’s death in his workshop and cast plates on which the (partly updated) master mark of Paulus Öham remained visible. 1671 – 1675 | Hans Nicolaus Spatz (Hintze no. 323a): Son of Hans Spatz II; inherited the matrix after his father’s death in 1670. 1704 – 1752 | Andreas Spatz (Hintze no. 378a): Grandson of the Spatz family (master in 1704, Burgess 1727–1729, died in the Nuremberg Zwölfbrüderkloster in 1752), who also cast from this mould with the updated Öham mark and exact diameter of 17.5 cm. Iconography & Representation The Shield (the center): Centrally within a cable border is Noah’s offering after the Flood. Noah kneels with his family before the burning altar (behind which a deer stands), while on the right the Ark rests on the mountain and in heaven God the Father appears above the rainbow. Beneath the scene is the four-line inscription: "NOE • GIENG • AVS • DER • ARCH • GETROST • OPFERDT • 16 • GOTT • 19" (1619). The Banner (the edge): Four long oval cartouches within tangled cords, alternated by Renaissance vases with flowers and vines: Top: God the Father creates Eve from the rib of the sleeping Adam. Left: God rebukes Adam and Eve for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Bottom: The Fall with the crowned serpent at the Tree of Wisdom. Right: Expulsion from Paradise by the archangel with the flaming sword. The 4 die marks in relief (identical to the Frits Philips Collection) Master mark Paulus (Baulus) Öham d. Ä. (top cartouche): Between God and Eve lies the Nuremberg coat of arms cut into the mould, with the left half imperial eagle and on the right, between the diagonal bars, the letter B and the half-circle Ö (Hintze Band II, p. 67, no. 193). Die-cutter's mark 'R.S.' (right cartouche): In the Paradise expulsion scene is the house mark with the letters R.S. of the Nuremberg die-cutter (Dubbe 1983, cat.no. 110). Coat of arms with three towers (lower cartouche on the right): Lower right near the Fall (oriented from the outer edge) a corded small shield with three angled towers and initials, exactly as on the mould on the Frits Philips exemplar. Oval medallion with border inscription (lower cartouche on the left): Lower left near the Fall an oval hallmarked medallion with a standing figure and an inscribed border, likewise cast identically on the Frits Philips exemplar. Technical execution & condition The plate is authentically ultra-thin cast from the two-piece solid mould and weighs only 195 grams. The reverse shows the characteristic fine concentric turning grooves of manual turning on the lathe, as well as the natural flow lines and solidification zone in the hollow keel where the wall is thinnest. It is in a beautiful, honest, and unrestored state with a pleasing old tin patina (without an eyelet for hanging or later narrowing). Provenance: Private Collection JF Monasso Diameter: 17.4 – 17.5 cm (exact original mould size in accordance with Hintze no. 193 and Dubbe cat. no. 110) Weight: 195 grams Museum references: Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum of Applied Arts, Leipzig; Maximilians-Museum, Augsburg; Museum of Applied Arts, Cologne; Museum of Applied Arts, Dresden; Frits Philips Collection, Eindhoven. Literature: E. Hintze, Die deutschen Zinngiesser und ihre Marken, Band II (Nürnberger Zinn), nos. 191, 193, 258a, 323a & 378a. B. Dubbe, Keuze uit de verzameling tin van Frits Philips (1983), p. 110, cat.no. 110 (pictured). H.-U. Haedeke, Zinn (1963), p. 209 & cat. Kunstgewerbemuseum Keulen (1976), no. 237.
