Yorkshire Photography. Yorkshire Photography. An excellent collection of glass slides of images taken by Harold Bryce Thomson (1896-1981), mainly topographical scenes of Wensleydale, including several images of the artist Fred Lawson, as well as several portraits. Approximately 475 slides in 7 wooden slide boxes. Harold Thompson (1896-1981) was born in London to Yorkshire parents. Harold served in WWI and later became a trichologist in Leeds. He had long been interested in photography, and by the Second World War, his photography had developed enormously; he had become the president of the Leeds Camera Club, giving lectures on photography, exhibiting and becoming involved with members of the Leeds Art Club. Amongst his friends was the artist Jacob Kramer, one of the Castle Bolton School of artists. As bombing in Leeds intensified during the Second World War, Harold and his wife Evelyn took the decision to evacuate their children privately to Wensleydale, where they were taken in by the Peacock family in Redmire. He regularly travelled by train to Wensleydale to visit his children and delighted in spending time exploring and photographing the area, often alongside artists Fred Lawson, George Graham, Sam Chadwick and George Jackson, or fellow members of the Leeds Camera Club. Harold, Evelyn and their youngest daughters continued to visit Wensleydale regularly right through to the late 1950s. His surviving photographs provide a remarkable record of a life that stretched from Victorian London, through two world wars, and the changing landscape of post-war Yorkshire. Approximately 475 slides in 7 wooden slide boxes
