Tectites (from the Greek tektos, fused) are natural glass objects that formed by the impact of large meteorites on the Earth's surface. Tectites are the driest minerals known, with an average water content of 0.005%. This is very rare, since most of the craters where tectites formed were underwater prior to impact. Zircon partially melted has also been found inside some tectites. This, along with the water content, suggests tectites formed under very high temperatures and pressures (similar to those needed to form diamonds). The crash was brutal, so molten material covered 10% of the Earth's surface, with indochinites even found in Antarctica.
