Worthmann (XX) - Waldbach mit Felsblöcken im Sonnenlicht

Waldbach with Boulder Blocks in Sunlight Düsseldorf School, around 1900 – Oil on cardboard, verso labeled “Worthmann” WORK A stream rushes over mossy stones toward the viewer, on the left and right are large boulder blocks, behind them a dense leafy forest through which the sun breaks and the foliage glows in yellow and light green; on the right two robust tree trunks. Light is the theme: dappled and impastoed, patches of light on leaves, water, and rock. A forest brook motif, as the Düsseldorf school painters depicted since Achenbach – en plein air painting around 1900. Landscape format, 34 x 46.4 cm. ARTIST The front of the painting is unsigned. On the back, in blue pen, “Worthmann.” is written, along with the pencil number “14408.” A marking on the back is not a signature; we mention it but make no attribution. In artist lexicons there is a Johannes Wortmann (1844 Ronsdorf – 1920 Düsseldorf), a pupil of Oswald Achenbach – whether the designation refers to him cannot be determined without a comparison work. Technique: oil on cardboard. Image size: 34 x 46.4 cm Frame size: 52.2 x 63.5 x 3.8 cm Framed weight: 900 g Signature: none on the front; back labeled “Worthmann.” in pencil “14408.” ORIGIN From private collection, acquired into our stock in 2026. CONDITION Good condition. Paint layer closed, impasto; in the dark mid-ground there is a fine craquelure. The cardboard shows water stains and drip marks on the back, none on the front. Not cleaned, not restored. Please regard the photos as part of the description. FRAME AND HANGING Black polished profiled frame of Dutch type with gilded inner edge (wave ornament). At the top inner edge there is a small loss of the gilding, the edges slightly bumped; back side with corner blocks. The frame is part of the lot. SHIPPING Framed shipment, corners and surface protected. Local pickup in Helmstedt possible. Frame: Black polished profiled frame with gilded inner edge; at the top a small loss of gilding, edges lightly worn; back with corner blocks."
