WORKSHOP OF ANTON KOTHGASSER (1769-1851): A VIENNESE ENAMELLED AND GILT GLASS BEAKER the cogwheel type clear glass beaker circa 1820, of typical slightly waisted, flared form, with 'cogwheel' cut base, painted in polychrome enamels with a freize of decoration of a cornfield, the yellow ears of corn on leafy green stems with various butterflies above, the rim and base with gilt highlights, the underside cut with a radiating star motif stained in amber, 11cm high Footnote: For a near identical ranftbecher attributed to the workshop of Kothgasser, see Christie's, London, 9 October 2003, lot 267, £10,575 inc. premium. The jewel-like quality of the luminous amber glass, detailed miniature painting and radiant gilt highlights of this Ranftbecher demonstrate why Viennese glass of this period is so highly prized. sculpture
