Wooden mask - Lega - DR Congo (No reserve price)

Wooden mask of the Lega from the DRC This wooden mask is associated with the Lega, a people established mainly in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, notably in the Kivu region. In Lega culture, carved art is closely linked to the Bwami initiation society, which plays a major role in transmitting values, teachings and knowledge within the community. Lega works often feature stylized shapes, elongated faces and deliberately pared-down features, giving the sculptures a strong symbolic dimension. Carved from wood, this mask illustrates the technical mastery of Lega artisans and their particular approach to representing the human figure. The sobriety of the forms and the strength of the expression confer to the piece a singular presence, while bearing witness to the richness of the eastern DRC’s artistic heritage. This contemporary work sits in the continuity of Lega sculptural traditions and can be appreciated for its artistic and cultural value.
