Wooden hook - Babrongko village Sentani - West Papua (No reserve price)

Old wooden food hook from Babrongko village, Lake Sentani, West Papua, This traditional household object was suspended from the roof or rafters of a house and used for hanging food safely out of reach of rats, dogs and other animals. The piece has a strong and beautifully simple sculptural form, with a deeply aged dark surface and clear traces of prolonged use. There are old losses and damage, clearly visible in the photographs and consistent with its considerable age and long working life. Field collected in Babrongko village in the 1990s. A rare and authentic example of traditional everyday material culture from the Lake Sentani area.
