We are grateful to the William Scott Foundation for their kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work, which has been recorded in their archives as Q 1772. Christian Watson (later Lady Innes) was secretary to Clifford Ellis, the visionary principal of the Bath Academy, which moved to Corsham in Wiltshire in 1946. Modelled on the Bauhaus, the Academy was designed to provide a more liberal form of art education, with a syllabus that included music, dancing and drama as well as the visual arts. It became a truly unique environment and creative hub for students to study and teachers to train, and saw many incredible artists pass through its doors - including Scott, who worked as Head of Paintings for many years.
