Canadian. A rare double-sided oil on board painting by William Glenworth Loney (1877-1956) of a large standing lion on one side and a winter Prince Edward County scene on the other. The lion with his wild mane and eyelashes fills the frame, with a rose bush and daisies prominently placed in the foreground. The winter scene shows a tree-lined snowy shore and a stag being chased by a wolf over the ice. Loney was a blacksmith in Prince Edward County, Ontario, who also carved and painted in his spare time; today his works are highly sought by folk-art collectors. In its original simple pine frame, this unusual picture was featured in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario. A printed label is on the frame, "William Loney, Picton, No 7". Ontario. 1940s.
