Édition publiée à la fin du XIXe siècle par la prestigieuse maison d'édition londonienne George Routledge and Sons.Ces ouvrages sont particulièrement recherchés pour leurs magnifiques illustrations hors-texte d'époque, gravées par des artistes de renom tels que George Cruikshank, Hablot K. Browne (Phiz) ou Sir John Gilbert.Une provenance historique exceptionnelle (Inclus) :Ce lot possède une histoire d'origine fascinante et entièrement documentée. Les livres ont appartenu à un certain Monsieur Ernest Williams, dont le tampon d'appartenance nominatif est imprimé sur la page de garde (voir photos).Cachée à l'intérieur du volume Jack Sheppard, une authentique carte postale suisse datée du 2 juillet 1904 a été retrouvée. Cette carte, écrite en français par la directrice de la prestigieuse Villa Engiadina (Vulpera, Suisse), était adressée à ce même Monsieur Ernest Williams alors qu'il séjournait à Lucerne. Le verso de la carte montre un parcours postal captivant : n'étant plus à son hôtel, la carte a été réexpédiée vers Clermont-Ferrand en France, se voyant appliquer au passage de multiples tampons de transit ainsi qu'un rare timbre de Chiffre-Taxe français. Browne (Phiz), and Sir John Gilbert.Exceptional & Fully Documented Provenance (Included):This specific set features a fascinating, interconnected history. The volumes belonged to a gentleman named Mr. Ernest Williams, whose ownership stamp is present on the endpaper (see photos).Tucked inside the pages of the Jack Sheppard volume, an authentic Swiss postcard dated July 2, 1904 was discovered. The postcard, handwritten in French by the manageress of the luxury Villa Engiadina (Vulpera, Switzerland), was explicitly addressed to this same Mr. Ernest Williams. The back of the postcard reveals a wonderful postal history: as the recipient had already left his hotel in Lucerne, the card was redirected to Clermont-Ferrand (France), bearing multiple transit postmarks and a rare French "Chiffre-Taxe" (postage due) stamp. Spines feature elegant gilt and black decorations. Top edges gilt.Condition: Good overall antiquarian condition. Bindings remain tight and firm. Clean interiors with some typical age-related foxing. Note: The spines are sun-faded (changed to a lighter pink/beige tone), which is very common for this specific red cloth edition.
