WILLEM VAN AELST (DUTCH 1627- AFTER 1687) STILL LIFE WITH HANGING HAWKING HOODS, BIRDS AND A GREEN HUNTING BAG ON A MARBLE LEDGE Oil on canvas 46.5 x 40.5cm (18¼ x 15¾in.) Elegant and refined are the words used to describe the artist’s work in the exhibition catalogue Elegance and Refinement: The Still-Life Paintings of Willem van Aelst [1], published in connection with the 2012 exhibition in Houston. This painting exemplifies Van Aelst’s mastery of subtle colour and delicate surface effects. He presents the trophies of a hunt, including dead birds, hunting equipment, and falconers’ hoods, arranged against a dark background. The delicate rendering of the stone ledge, the softness of the birds’ feathers, and the rich green velvet and gold decoration of the hunting bag reveal the artist’s exceptional sensitivity to texture and material. Born in Delft, Van Aelst travelled to France in the mid-1640s, where he remained until around 1651 before continuing to Italy. In Florence, he worked for members of the Medici family and was associated with the court of Ferdinand II de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. He returned to the Netherlands in 1656 and subsequently established himself in Amsterdam. 1. T. Paul, J. Clifton, A. Wheelock Jr., J. Berfer Hochstrasser et al. Elegance and Refinement.
