In the late 1930s, tastes in Europe and America shifted away from the cool, white look of early Art Deco toward a warmer, more rounded style known in the English-speaking world as “Retro Style.” This shift can be explained not exclusively, but in part, by the technical and economic changes of the time. Platinum, for example, was effectively no longer available to goldsmiths by the start of the war at the latest, which is why the switch to yellow gold was not entirely voluntary. At the same time, new forms made their way into jewelry design—forms that seem surprising from today’s perspective. These were primarily the tracks of the new tanks (“tank tracks”), which now served as inspiration for various jewelry details. One of the characteristic ring designs of those years was the so-called “tank ring,” whose shape—running across the finger—resembled a link in such a track. These rings were crafted in all sorts of different variations. This vintage bracelet is a beautiful example of how this design language remained popular even after the war ended. The band is composed of flexible links and combines yellow gold and rose gold into a substantial, magnificent design. The individual links are polished to a high shine, and thanks to the many joints, the bracelet drapes softly around the wrist.
