Watanabe Yuji, indeed, the son of Watanabe Masao, not only shows that he has inherited his father's great talent; he goes one step further. What an artist! A portion of his designs is characterized by vividly colored kimonos with complex motifs; another portion is more subdued in color and finish. The hairstyles are very detailed and arranged in both symmetrical—and, as you can see with this design, asymmetrical—styles. Each strand of hair is so precise and applied with so much care — phenomenal! The same goes for the facial expression: seemingly simple, but it is precisely in that simplicity that you see the master's hand reflected. Additionally you can see artistic daring in the way the white camellia is prominently placed on the body, beautifully contrasting with the pure wood color. It is no wonder that Yuji Watanabe's kokeshi are highly sought after by kokeshi enthusiasts around the world. If this kokeshi had been pristine, the price would have been three to four times higher than the current minimum price. As you can see, however, there is a crack running from top to bottom, a consequence of the natural properties of the wood. Fortunately the crack is on the side. One advantage is also: precisely because this kokeshi is not perfect, it offers the opportunity to own a work by this unique artist. Look closely at the photos so you know what you are buying!
