Western Asia Minor, uncertain mint Obol Ca. 480-438 BC

A very rare silver obol attributed to an uncertain mint in western Asia Minor, apparently unpublished in this denomination. Its facing feline head, interpreted as a panther or possibly a lion, gives this miniature coin a distinctive presence. Related designs occur on other silver denominations, but the issuing mint remains unidentified. Western Asia Minor, uncertain mint. Ca. 480-438 BC. Obol (Silver, 8.8 mm, 0.71 g). Obv: Facing head of panther (or lion?) Rev: Rough quadripartite incuse square. Reference: Unpublished. Cf. MacDonald 1 for other denominations; cf. Leu Web 24, 1462 ("hekte"); Leu Web 19, 1449 (same); Naumann 77, 34 (diobol). Very rare. Struck during the fifth century BC, this small silver fraction belongs to the diverse monetary world of the eastern Aegean. Its facing animal head and rough quadripartite incuse preserve the visual character of early Greek coinage, when a single emblem could identify an issue without naming its city. Here, the absence of an inscription leaves that identity unresolved: a small but intriguing witness to a mint whose name has yet to be securely recovered.
