Exceptional October 30, 1946 War Department letter from the White Sands Proving Ground documenting an actual component recovered from a German V-2 rocket launched there on October 24, 1946. The small component remains attached to the letter, which states that it was part of the rocket's "Mix-Computer." The letter is signed by White Sands Public Relations Officer Alexander Szabo and bears the period caption "First Object retrieved from Outer Space." Most significantly, the document is signed and annotated by Wernher von Braun beside the attached V-2 component, writing "quite obviously!" Von Braun had been the principal architect of Germany's V-2 program before being brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip, where his work with captured V-2 rockets at White Sands became an important foundation for the American missile and space programs. A remarkable early American rocketry artifact combining a documented V-2 component, White Sands provenance, and von Braun's autograph on the same sheet. Verified authentic by Steve Grad, Certificate GA-09096. Estimate $500 - $1,000
