Wedgwood Cobalt Blue and Gilt Hand-Painted Porcelain Pedestal Vase, circa 1880

A late Victorian Wedgwood bone china pedestal vase featuring an ovoid body and two high, upswept, fully gilded handles in a bulls horn form. The vessel is secured via a central bolt to a short stem mounted on a square plinth base. The exterior is finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze and decorated with elaborate hand-painted polychrome enamel and gilded floral sprays, including lilies and peonies, reflecting the Japonaiserie influence of the Aesthetic Movement. A gilded Greek key meander border accents the neck and the foot of the stem. The square base is detailed with further gilded linear and foliate patterns. The underside of the base bears the blue-green Wedgwood factory mark featuring the Portland Vase silhouette above the company name. Also present on the underside is a circular Rubin Collection label.
