His works, such as Composition VII and Impression III (Concert), are characterized by an intensive engagement with color, form, and sound, aiming to express emotional and spiritual states. Kandinsky’s interest in synesthesia—the connection between colors and music—shows parallels to the works of Paul Klee, a close friend and collaborator in The Blue Rider, who also used abstract forms to visualize inner worlds. Kandinsky’s early works, which still contain figurative elements, show the influence of artists like Henri Matisse and the Fauves, whose bright color palettes and expressive brushwork deeply impressed him. Yet while Matisse emphasized the decorative and sensuous quality of color, Kandinsky sought to use color as a means of directly communicating emotions and spiritual ideas. This search for a universal, non-representational visual language also connects Kandinsky with the cubist experiments of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who likewise questioned traditional representation in art, but within a stricter, more formal framework. Kandinsky’s theories of abstraction and his belief that art can make the invisible visible influenced not only his contemporaries but also later generations of artists. Thus his ideas inspired the abstract art of Piet Mondrian, who also developed a universal visual language through geometric forms and primary colors, albeit in a stricter and more rational manner. The influence of Kandinsky can also be seen in the works of Jackson Pollock, a representative of Abstract Expressionism, particularly in the idea that painting can be a direct expression of the inner self. In his later phase, Kandinsky returned to a more organic, flowing formal language, with parallels to the work of Joan Miró, who also combined abstract forms with a playful, almost surreal approach. Both artists shared the aim of using abstraction to connect with deeper, universal truths beyond the visible. Wassily Kandinsky remains a central figure in art history, whose work opened the door to modern abstract art. His theories and painting influenced not only his contemporaries but also laid the foundation for the development of abstract art in the 20th century. Kandinsky’s quest for the essence of art and his conviction that color and form can speak their own emotional language have inspired generations of artists and fundamentally changed the perception of art.
