Walker Evans (American, 1903-1975), Sitting Room Interior, Through

Large format, gelatin silver print, circa 1937-1938 printed late 1970s, numbered 1/75 at lower right margin and with Walker Evans Estate blindstamp at lower right, unframed. Image size 17 x 21.5 in.; Sheet size 24 x 20 in. A film negative of this image is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under the title Sitting Room Interior, Through Doorway, Residence of Gifford Cochran, Croton Falls, New York. This was among the photographs Evans took under the commission of Gifford Cochran, a wealthy colleague of Lincoln Kirstein. Cochran asked Evans to photograph his Greek Revival home in Croton Falls, NY, along with other architecturally significant in nearby towns. This request eventually led to Evans documenting "the finest surviving examples of Greek Revival architecture in the South." (Hambourg, Maria Morris, et al. Walker Evans. New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2000. Print.) Good estate condition; very light wear to the edges of the sheet.
