The company operated under various names depending on its owner; it was founded in 1776 by John Jones and, beginning in 1791 (after John Jones retired from the business due to his age), was continued by his sons and successors, William and Samuel. Around the year 1800, they moved into new business premises in the Holborn district of London. W & S Jones remained in business until 1859, when the younger brother, Samuel, died. William Jones (1762–1831) maintained a personal correspondence with Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826, third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809), which brought the company not only orders from Jefferson himself but also from other prominent figures and institutions in North America, such as Harvard University and the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806) to chart a land route to the Pacific coast.
