Virgin of Silence - Italian Master of the 17th Century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions 137 x 115 cm. The Virgin Mary is depicted seated, delicately holding a large white cloth upon which the sleeping Child rests. The diagonal positioning of the child’s body lends dynamism to a composition dominated by serenity and balance. Mary’s gentle gestures, the inclination of her head, and the silent atmosphere create a scene of profound maternal intimacy. The presence of classical architecture and an open landscape in the background enrich the pictorial space and reinforce the idealized character of the representation. The modeling of the figures, the chromatic harmony, and the enveloping luminosity demonstrate a sensibility akin to the Italianate styles prevalent during the 17th century. The quality of the drawing and the elegance of the drapery underscore the influence of the great Marian prototypes of the Renaissance and Baroque traditions, making the work a refined example of contemplative religious painting. Dimensions 137 x 115 cm. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions.
