Esotericism / Illuminism / Trial [Vintras, Pierre-Michel-Eugène] — Caen Correctional Court. The Prophet Pierre-Michel Vintras and associates. Prevention of fraud and breach of trust. Third edition. Caen, Félix Poisson Printing House, rue Froide, 18, 1842. Octavo, paperback, 62 pp., with the original green cover printed and framed with typographic ornaments. A rare judicial report of the hearings of August 19 and 20, 1842, presided over by Mr. Lhermitte, concerning Pierre-Michel-Eugène Vintras (1807-1875), famous Norman mesmerist, founder of the Work of Mercy and an important figure in French prophetic mysticism of the 19th century. The text relates the charges of fraud and breach of trust, the supernatural revelations attributed to Vintras, his ecstasies, his allegedly miraculous cures, and the organization of his religious community. Third edition of 1842, with a final note stating that the first two editions contained typographical errors and omissions corrected in this one. Copy preserved in its original printed cover, unlike some copies listed under a blank cover. Cover worn with significant marginal losses, particularly on the front cover and the back; foxing, stains and damp traces. References: publication listed in Jean-Claude Farcy’s bibliography on Criminocorpus; BnF, Vintras entry.
