Sparkling diamonds, luminous rubies and emeralds, precious sapphires and pearls are set in high-carat gold. They form a bouquet as rich and beautiful as a carefree summer day. A sparkling band of white gold, set with more diamonds, holds the bouquet together. We first encounter jewellery in the form of bouquets or baskets and vases filled with flowers in the mid-18th century. As part of the so-called Giardinetto fashion, floral arrangements fit into the playful and sensual era of the Rococo. Marie Antoinette picked flowers in her hameau in the garden of Versailles, shepherdesses in English landscape gardens were the ideal of the time. But even in the centuries that followed, the pretty motif of the flower basket experienced repeated renaissances, not least in Art Deco and then again in the 1950s. The dark years of the war were over and now beauty should shine again! The piece here is not only unusually richly decorated, as confirmed by an independent appraisal from Idar-Oberstein; the brooch is also particularly detailed and carefully executed. Each flower is individually created and designed. It is thus not one of the usual factory wares of the time, but a unique piece designed by hand. We discovered the brooch in Hamburg.
