Culture: Viking / Norse Date: 9th–11th century AD Material: Bronze Size: 43 x 34 mm Condition: Very good; complete with all pendants. Surface wear consistent with age. Patina: Attractive green patina with areas of earthen encrustation, enhancing the authenticity and appeal. Provenance: Scandinavia or Norse-settled regions. A rare and enigmatic Viking bronze amulet consisting of a horizontal suspension bar from which 3 articulated pendants are attached, each in the form of a stylized “duck foot.” These unusual pendants are generally associated with ritual and magical practices, sometimes interpreted as sorcerer’s amulets worn by völur (seers) or ritual specialists during ceremonial activity. Objects of this type remain mysterious but are strongly associated with Viking religious and magical life. The unusual “duck foot” pendants may represent protective or fertility symbols, or echo shamanistic associations with birds as spirit-guides in Norse belief. The presence of articulated elements suggests movement and sound, which may have been important during ritual performance. Such amulets are very rare and are highly prized as examples of Viking spiritual material culture. These amulets were likely suspended from leather cords and used during rituals, with their gentle jingling and movement enhancing their visual and acoustic presence. Secure shipping with tracking. Professionally packed and sent via registered post. Multiple purchases will be combined where possible.
