In the 19th century, classical antiquity was as alluring as ever. Even the most famous form of jewellery from antiquity, the cameo, was revived: rings, brooches and necklaces were adorned with cameos in a central position instead of diamonds and gemstones. This ring was also created in the course of this fashion – but interprets the cameo in a very contemporary way. Carved in hardstone on a white, rose-colored background, we see a young, Greek-style woman turning her classical profile towards us. The cameo is held by delicate, finely tapered gold claws. On the outside, a sparkling yet restrained frame of rose-cut diamonds, set à jour, frames the portrait. But who is the depicted woman? The gods of antiquity were a popular subject for 19th century cameo cutters, but over time cameos began to depict the idea of antiquity rather than distinct personalities – so no specific goddess was depicted at all. Without attributes, our unknown beauty thus becomes a symbol of classical beauty. The fine, antique ring is very well preserved. We were able to discover it in London. A piece of jewellery of subtle, yet all the more compelling beauty, which captivates not through heavy gemstones, but through the delicacy of its execution and the soft, painterly color palette.
