A pupil of Jean Achille Benouville and Jules Dupré, as early as 1829 he participated in the Ghent Salon and then settled in Barbizon. He subsequently took part regularly in the Paris Salon. Baron Victor Eugène de Papeleu (actually Papeleu de Poelvoorde) came from a wealthy Ghent family and was not only important as a painter, but also as an art collector. He was one of the owners of The Angelus, which he sold to Stevens. This “distinguished” amateur spent all his fortune in creating a gallery of paintings that he was obliged to sell off, little by little, out of financial necessity. Travels took him away even before 1845, among others to the Orient. In 1853, the artist settled in Paris, and stayed in Barbizon in 1855 where he met Camille Corot, Félix Ziem, Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet.
