Vercors. The Silence of the Sea (Story). In Paris, from J. Haumont’s Printing, 1945 (M.CM.XLV), 96 pages and one leaf (final printed page), complete. Paperback, original wraparound cover in blue-gray paper printed in black. Limited edition, one of 990 copies on pure rag vellum from the Papeteries Johannot of Annonay, this one numbered 976. It constitutes the first volume of the “Collection of Masters of Yesterday and Today,” whose printing was completed on 20 September 1945. A precious copy enriched with a fine signed autograph inscription by the author in ink on the half-title: "to Monsieur Mathy-Fontaine, Sincere homage from Vercors". The work indeed bears the mention of the clandestine first edition ("Copyright by Éditions de Minuit 1942") and the dedication "To the memory of Saint-Pol-Roux, murdered poet". Beautiful copy not trimmed, foxing and pin-pricks on the cover, interior very fresh despite a brown stain, see photos for more details. Very carefully shipped in a rigid and watertight carton.
