This antique Japanese Satsuma vase forms a beautiful example of Asian craftsmanship from the late Meiji to early Taisho period, dating from roughly 1900–1925. The compact yet substantial vase is made from the creamy white earthenware so characteristic of Satsuma, with a finely crackled glaze. What makes this vase particularly decorative is the rich hand-painted decoration in the so-called moriage style, in which the enamel relief is applied in visibly thick raised layers on the surface. The front depicts a detailed spiritual representation of Lohan, the holy disciples of Buddha, complete with halos around their heads. The figures are shown with traditional attributes, including a sacred scroll and a mythical dragon restrained at their feet. When the vase is turned, the reverse reveals a serene and layered natural landscape with mountains, a flowing waterfall, and stylized birds flying above the water. The whole is richly and finely accented with gold details. At the bottom, on the unglazed base, is the authentic impressed square seal mark in which the characters for Satsuma are clearly legible. The vase is in a beautiful antique state without major damage and has a height of 15.5 centimeters, a width and depth of 9.5 centimeters, and a solid weight of 430 grams. A splendid and authentic collector’s item that makes a atmospheric addition for any admirer of Oriental art and antique ceramics. Dimensions: 15.5 x 9.5 x 9.5 cm Weight: 430 g
