Elegant pair of antique patinated bronze ritual zun-type vases. The body of each vase is richly embellished in high relief with a famous mythological scene depicting the wise scholars Xu You and Chao Fu accompanied by their ox by the riverbank, set against a geometric background of leiwen (recurring geometric pattern) and floral motifs (plum/pine). The necks are widely flared into a festooned, multi-lobed corolla. The interior as well as the reverse of the base reveal the natural yellow color of the alloy beneath the original brown patina. In very good overall antique condition. Beautiful original brown patina with slight minor signs of wear due to age. No holes, no chips, no restorations. Please study the photos carefully, as they are an integral part of the description. Specifications: • Origin: Japan • Era: Late Edo period (1603-1868) or Meiji period (1868-1912) – 19th century • Material: Patinated bronze • Height: 16 cm • Total weight: 2 kg
